Dionisio Aguado y García

Dionisio Aguado y García (8 April 1784 – 29 December 1849) was a Spanish classical guitarist and composer

Born in Madrid, he studied with Miguel García. In 1826, Aguado visited Paris, where he met and became friends with and for a while lived with Fernando Sor. Sor’s duo Les Deux Amis (“The Two Friends”) commemorated the friendship: one part is marked “Sor” and the other “Aguado.”

Aguado’s major work Escuela de Guitarra was a guitar tutor published in 1825. As of 2011, it is still in print, with Tecla Editions releasing a reprint in 2005. In the Escuela Aguado describes his use of fingernails on the right hand as well as his invention of a “tripodion”: a device that held the guitar and thus minimized the damping effect of the player’s body on the guitar’s back and sides. Aguado’s other works include Trois Rondos Brillants (Opus 2), Le Menuet Affandangado (Opus 15), Le Fandango Varie (Opus 16), as well as numerous waltzes, minuets, and other light pieces. The more extended works require a virtuoso technique and left-hand stretches that are almost impossible on the longer string lengths of modern guitars. (See Frederick Noad, “The Classical Guitar”)

Aguado returned home to Madrid in 1837 and died there aged 65.

Niccolò Paganini

Niccolò Paganini (Genua, 27 oktober 1782 – Nice, 27 mei 1840) was een in het Italiaanse Genua geboren vioolvirtuoos en componist.

Op elfjarige leeftijd trad hij voor het eerst op als violist, na muziekonderricht van zijn vader te hebben genoten en les op gitaar zowel als viool. Vanaf 1797 reisde hij door Europa en trad op in onder andere Wenen en Parijs. Zijn bekendheid groeide hierdoor. In 1831 ging hij voor het eerst op tournee in Engeland.

Veel mensen geloofden dat Paganini een ‘duivelsviolist’ was. Paganini versterkte de legendevorming om zijn persoon door ’s nachts op kerkhoven voor de doden te spelen. Hij had ook de gewoonte om voor een concert zijn gezicht wit te schminken om zo nog meer tot de verbeelding te spreken, als lijdend kunstenaar. Een mysterieuze ziekte zorgde voor nog meer mystificatie rondom zijn persoon. Hij leed namelijk aan het Marfan syndroom, hierdoor had hij zeer lange vingers.

In 1834 schreef Hector Berlioz op Paganini’s verzoek een compositie voor altviool en orkest, getiteld Harold in Italië, die Paganini echter nooit heeft uitgevoerd.

Niccolò Paganini overleed in Nice op 57-jarige leeftijd.

Onymyrrhe Oil

You need not spend a fortune on fancy nail oils. If you want one of the best nail conditioners, Onymyrrhe, is a product that you can rub nightly into the matrix areas (lunula and cuticle area) of nails. A bottle is expensive, about $20, but lasts for nearly two years. Even if you use Onymyrrhe, it is still important to rub oil into your nails throughout the day.

Nail Care : Some Don’t and Do’s

  • Don’t push your cuticles back with a hard tool. Doing so may damage the matrix, the part that generates new nail and makes the nail proteins.
  • Do push damp cuticles back gently with a towel over your finger.
  • Don’t use acetone-containing solvents on your nails.
  • Do use non-acetone containing solvents to remove nail products.
  • Don’t get solvents like gasoline, turpentine, etc. on your nails.
  • Do wear protective gloves when working with solvents.
  • Don’t repeatedly wash/dry your hands and nails. (Hard for physicians among us.) Do wear protective gloves when house cleaning, doing dishes, etc. Do keep you nails well oiled to minimize their drying out excessively.
  • Don’t spend a lot of time in chlorinated swimming pools. Do keep you nails well oiled if you must.
  • Don’t cut back your cuticles. You may damage the nail growth matrix. You may wish to avoid professional manicures, or ask your manicurist NOT to cut back your cuticles, but to oil them and gently push them back.
  • Don’t file nails all the way down to the nail bed at the sides. Doing so takes away the natural nail wrap that protects from horizontal splits.
  • Do invest in a really good nail file.
  • Do always have a nail file with you. Snags can happen any time.
  • Do invest in very fine abrasive paper like that sold by the Classical Guitar Store as nail paper. Wrapped over a nail file, it can polish the edges and under-edges of your nails. A four-way nail buffer works well too. Buff only the edges and under-edges of nails. Buffing the tops on nails will thin them.
  • Don’t reflexively reach out to do things with your right hand. Think! Do figure out how to do nail-risky things left-handed.
  • Do rub oils into your nails several times a day and always after washing your hands.

Johann Sebastian Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach (Eisenach, 21 maart 1685 – Leipzig, 28 juli 1750) was een Duitse componist van barokmuziek, organist, klavecinist, violist, muziekpedagoog en dirigent. Hij wordt door de meeste muziekwetenschappers beschouwd als een van de grootste en invloedrijkste componisten uit de geschiedenis van de klassieke muziek vanwege de inventiviteit waarmee hij melodie, harmonie en ritme, maar ook diverse muziekstijlen uit zijn tijd en dansvormen combineerde, wat vele componisten na hem inspireerde en wat ze ook trachtten te evenaren.

Zijn omvangrijk oeuvre, dat door Wolfgang Schmieder thematisch voor het eerst werd gecatalogiseerd en gerubriceerd, aanvankelijk slechts ten behoeve van de Duitse muziekuitgeverij Breitkopf & Härtel als uitleen- en publicatiecatalogus, in de Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis (BWV), valt met name op door groot componeertechnisch vakmanschap en – voor velen – een sterke emotionele zeggingskracht . Het is een unieke synthese van de verworvenheden van de meerstemmige, polyfone muziek met die van de eenstemmige, de monodie.

Bach wordt, met Claudio Monteverdi en Jean-Philippe Rameau, als hoogtepunt van de muzikale barok (ca. 1600 – ca. 1750) beschouwd. Zijn overgeleverde muziek, die pas vanaf circa 1800 in grote oplagen gepubliceerd werd, is ook van grote betekenis gebleken voor vele componisten na hem.

In zijn behandeling van polyfonie en harmonie bereikte Bach een kwaliteit waarin hij de grenzen van wat tot dan toe gerealiseerd was in de klassieke muziek verre overschreed. Bachs oeuvre omvat vrijwel alle stijlen en vormen die in zijn tijd gangbaar waren, met uitzondering van opera.Bach werd geboren op 21 maart 1685 te Eisenach in de huidige Duitse deelstaat Thüringen als telg van een oud muzikaal geslacht (over 7 generaties telde het meer dan 120 musici). Gedoopt werd hij op 23 maart in de Sankt Georgenkirche, gelegen op het centrale stadsplein van Eisenach waaraan ook het stadskasteel van de vorsten van Sachsen-Eisenach is gelegen. Als tweede naam kreeg de dopeling de naam van zijn peetoom, Sebastian Nagel, stadsblazer uit Gotha. Hij kreeg al op zeer jonge leeftijd van zijn vader Johann Ambrosius Bach vioolles.
